My Dad, My Hero

My dad is not a perfect man by any means, he'll tell you that himself. But it's how he's conquered life and broken free from things that held him back that makes him a hero in my book.

I've grown more and more proud of my dad especially in the past year when he made a decision that changed his life and our family's forever.

He's a living testimony to the fact that you're never too old to change, improve and get better. Most of all, he is proof that God can break through the hardest of hearts and years with of shame and pain.

I think it's a daughter thing-- we want to believe our dads are these invincible people who can fix anything and rescue us from any trouble. There's many times I've put my dad on a pedestal which never worked. As you get to know your dad or any one in your family, disappointments happen and imperfections show through. You see that dad isn't as invincible or mighty as you thought.

Dads don't belong on a pedestal --they belong at our side. I now look at my dad as a human being who's advice and guidance is only there to bless me and who's love is more constant than anyone else in my life. He messes up but so do I and if I expect forgiveness, I have to be willing to give it, too.

He's my biggest fan and I am his and I couldn't be more proud of him as Father's Day approaches. If all goes well, he has the perfect present in store this weekend and I can't wait to see his face! (I'll make sure to post a picture.)

Happy Father's Day to all the Dads out there.
Thank you for being our heroes.

Dad.

I am my Daddy's girl. As we've gotten older, our time together has gotten sweeter. Maybe its because he knows time is limited. All I know is I'm forever indebted to this man for his great sacrifices and faith in me, his daughter.

He's not a perfect father but he's a present father. My supportive, candid, quirky, loving Dad.

Conversations with my dad.

I bought an iPhone yesterday. My paranoid self couldn't decide if I was excited or scared. It's a big purchase and I was worried if I could afford it.

I shared my phone and concern with my dad and he asked...

"Why are you scared, child? You know what's scary? Making $3.25 an hour, having two children under 2 and finding out your mom needed surgery. But I had faith. God would take care of us if it was His will. He'll take care of you, too."

His story belittled my problem in a good way. I wondered if the "He" my dad was talking about was God or himself. I think both.

A word from the wise-faith.

An ode to everything white

On Friday I had my semi-annual check-up with the doc who had to test me for everything under the sun. I hesitated, "Are you sure I need to be tested for all that? I'm perfectly healthy."

"Well you never know, and it'd be good to know where you stand," she replied.
Fine. Blood was streamed out of my vein and into 4 plastic tubes. After taping me up with neon green tape, so nice and tight, the nurse sent me home.

Little did I know she would call back today and tell me I have high cholesterol! She said it so nonchalantly, too.

That was when I told my boss I was going to dying an early death and thought about the life insurance policies I took out.

OK, I'm being dramatic.

But that was REALLY when I looked up (WebMD is awesome) what could be causing this problem. And that's when I saw it.
My most beloved foods are killing me!

MILK.
WHITE BREAD.
PASTA.
SUGAR.
MASHED POTATOES.
PIE.
WHITE RICE.

Why must these good things be so bad?
Well, here I go. Another goal. I'm switching my 2 glasses of milk for soy.
White bread for wheat.
Pasta for salad?
Cookies for Benefiber.
Mashed potatoes for real vegetables.
Pie for real fruit.
White rice for brown...

Hopefully my chef (the father) will be sympathetic to my needs.

So long, everything white. My tastebuds will miss you.
